Product Detailed Information
1. Properties: Colorless monoclinic crystals or white crystalline powder, soluble in water, dilute acids, ethylenediamine, ethanolamine, and aqueous potassium iodide solution; slightly soluble in liquid sulfur dioxide and liquid ammonia; insoluble in alcohols and ammonia water. In acidic solutions, potassium iodate is a strong oxidizing agent, reacting with reducing substances such as hydrogen sulfide, hydroiodic acid, and sulfur dioxide, where it is itself reduced, releasing free iodine; aqueous potassium iodate solution can be reduced to iodide by X-rays or α particles; placing solid potassium iodate on red-hot charcoal produces a slight deflagration effect, and if mixed with combustible materials and subjected to impact. In alkaline media, potassium iodate can be oxidized by stronger oxidizing agents such as chlorine or hypochlorous acid to potassium periodate.
2. Uses: Used in chemical analysis as a precipitating agent; in agriculture as a feed additive; in medicine as an iodized salt or medication for the prevention and treatment of endemic goiter.
